A portrait is mostly light. Name the setup a photographer would use and the model builds it: where the key light sits, how dark the shadows fall and what color the backdrop is.
Rembrandt, butterfly, loop and split lighting all work by name. Ask for a softbox, a beauty dish or a single bare bulb, and the shadows on the face change to match.
Ask for a monochrome gallery print, a grainy 35mm film look or a bright high-key finish. Tone words such as “deep blacks” or “soft gray midtones” steer the result.
Turn a photo into an oil painting, a watercolor or a charcoal drawing that still reads as the same person. Brushwork, canvas texture and palette are yours to choose.
Upload one clear, front-facing photo for a portrait of a real person. To create someone new, leave the upload empty and describe age, hair, clothing and mood.
Write the lighting setup, the backdrop and the finish in one or two sentences, e.g. “split light, black backdrop, black and white, 85mm”.

A photo taken facing a window, without flash or hard shadows, gives the model a clean map of the face to relight in any studio setup.
Keep the clothes and hair when you change the lighting. If you also want a new outfit, run that as a second edit on the finished result.
Words like “natural skin texture” and “no heavy retouching” stop the over-smoothed look that gives an AI portrait away.
Write “head-and-shoulders” for a classic frame or “waist-up” to show hands and clothing. A tight crop keeps attention on the eyes.
A studio portrait usually takes a photographer, two or three lights, a paper backdrop and an hour of setup. An AI portrait generator gets close from one ordinary photo because it treats light as something you can describe. Ask for a soft key light at 45 degrees and a dark backdrop, and the shadow under the cheekbone, the catchlight in the eyes and the falloff on the shoulders all follow.

Likeness depends on the model. GPT Image 2.5, the default here, follows long lighting notes closely and usually keeps a face recognizable. Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro keep faces most faithfully, so choose them for a portrait of yourself or a gift for your family. No model makes a perfect copy of a face, so run a prompt twice and keep the better one.
