Nano Banana Not Working? Fix Missing Images and Failed Edits
Nano Banana not working? Find the next step for missing Gemini images, stuck requests, upload errors, and failed edits, with real Nano Banana 2 examples.

If Nano Banana is not working, check where it stops: missing image access, a rejected photo, a stuck request, or an incorrect edit. Check account and limit messages first. If access is available, try a simple prompt without a photo. In AI Photo Generator, choose Nano Banana 2 for that test.

Which Nano Banana problem are you seeing?
Save the exact error message. Gemini Apps, the Gemini API, and AI Photo Generator have separate account rules and limits.
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| No Images option in Gemini | Check the signed-in account and image-feature eligibility. |
| A usage-limit notice | Follow the limit and refresh information shown in your account. |
| A refusal or blocked-content message | Read the reason and revise the request to comply with it. |
| Text describing an image, but no picture | Start through Gemini's Images menu and explicitly ask to generate an image. |
| A spinner or “Something went wrong” | Save the prompt, then compare a simple request in a new conversation. |
| Your photo never appears as a reference | Export a fresh JPG or PNG and confirm its thumbnail appears. |
| AI Photo Generator asks for sign-in or credits | Check access and the displayed cost for the selected model. |
| An image arrives, but the edit is wrong | Attach the original photo and ask for one visible change. |
Why is Nano Banana missing in Gemini Apps?
On desktop, Google's current instructions start at Open Sidebar → Images. Nano Banana doesn't need to appear as a separate model name in the chat selector: Flash or Pro uses Nano Banana 2 for image requests. Flash-Lite uses Nano Banana 2 Lite, which isn't designed for multiple references or repeated edits. Paid users can use Redo with Pro on an existing image. Google's image-feature help
Check that you're signed in to the intended Google account. Availability depends on supported countries and languages. Google also sets age requirements and says editing is unavailable under 18; school accounts can have additional restrictions. Check eligibility if generation works but editing does not.
If Gemini displays a limit notice, follow its refresh information. Google's Gemini Apps limits guide explains that usage depends on the model, features, prompt complexity, and conversation length. Clearing browser data cannot replenish a used allowance.
What should you try when Gemini hangs or returns only text?
If there is no access, limit, or refusal message, save your prompt and try a new image conversation without uploads. Begin with “Generate an image” and describe one simple subject; the portrait prompt below is one example.
If that works, add your reference photo next, then one editing instruction. A success narrows the problem to a difference between attempts; it doesn't identify a bug.
If the simple request still fails, reopen the app or reload the page and try the same account and prompt in another browser or on the web version. Keep the model the same. If one client works, check the failing client for updates or interfering extensions.
If both fail, keep the error, time, model, and results of those attempts for a support report. A spinner alone doesn't establish an outage. For API failures, Google's documentation links to Google AI Studio's status page; check the affected service and incident date.
Why won't a photo attach in AI Photo Generator?
AI Photo Generator's file picker supports JPG, PNG, and WebP, and the per-file upload cap is 8 MB. These are this site's limits, not Gemini's.
- Open the photo on your device. If it cannot be displayed, export another copy from the original source.
- Save a fresh JPG or PNG under 8 MB. Renaming an extension does not convert a file.
- Attach only that photo and confirm its thumbnail appears before generating.
For “This photo could not be read,” try the exported copy. If it still fails, try the same file in another browser before changing the photo.
The image-to-image tool takes a reference plus a description of the new version. Explicitly select Nano Banana 2. Tool pages pre-fill the prompt box; the words you submit go to the selected model as typed.
Nano Banana 2 requires sign-in and uses credits here. The pricing page, checked October 9, 2026, lists 4 credits for a 1K image. Check the displayed cost before another attempt. If a request is still running, return to its tab and inspect its status before submitting again.
Does Nano Banana 2 work without a reference photo?
Remove all reference thumbnails, select Nano Banana 2, set Quality to 1K and Size to 3:4, and enter this exact prompt:
Generate a studio portrait of a fictional 35-year-old adult man wearing a navy crew-neck sweater, plain gray background, natural skin texture and even daylight.
Nano Banana 2 text-only result showing a smiling fictional adult man with dark hair, a beard, and a navy sweater against gray Text-only result: Nano Banana 2, 1K, 3:4. No reference photo was attached.
The portrait has a navy knit sweater, gray background, and an uncropped head. Keep the diagnostic request simple; the AI portrait generator offers other starting prompts.
If your text-only request succeeds and your edit fails, check the reference upload and editing eligibility next. If both fail, return to the account or request error.
Can Nano Banana 2 make one small edit?
In the AI photo editor, select Nano Banana 2, 1K, 3:4 and attach one photo. The fictional reference depicts a different adult from the text-only portrait.
Instruction:
Change only his navy sweater to forest green. Preserve his face, hair, pose, background and lighting.

Left: fictional reference photo. Right: Nano Banana 2, 1K, 3:4, using the left photo as its only reference.
The sweater changed to dark green. His facial features, hairstyle, neutral expression, and framing remain recognizable. Both examples were generated through the product's Nano Banana 2 model service. We did not reproduce a failed website upload or test Gemini Apps.
If your sweater stays navy, check the attached thumbnail and name the garment directly. If the face changes, go back to the original photo and request only the color change. The Nano Banana image-editing guide shows another small edit with glasses. For a framing problem, use the Nano Banana aspect-ratio guide.
What does a Gemini API error code tell you?
For a direct API integration, read the status and response message together. Google's API error reference lists these actions:
- 400: Correct invalid parameters or unmet prerequisites such as billing.
- 401 or 403: Check the key, authentication, and project permissions.
- 402: Address the depleted Prepay credit balance.
- 404: Verify the resource path and model name.
- 429: Distinguish a short-term rate limit from an exhausted daily quota.
- 503: Retry with increasing delays for temporary service unavailability.
Google's API troubleshooting guide recommends exponential backoff with jitter and a maximum retry count for transient failures. Daily quota exhaustion needs a reset or quota increase; repeated retries won't repair invalid parameters, billing, or permissions. For a blocked output, inspect the stated reason and revise the request accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nano Banana down today?
An old outage thread or one failed request cannot answer that. Check current incident dates for the service you're using. A successful request on another platform doesn't establish Gemini Apps or API health.
Why can Nano Banana generate pictures but fail to edit my photo?
An edit adds a reference-upload step. Confirm the thumbnail appears and try one small change. In Gemini Apps, also check age and account requirements for editing.
Should I change models when Nano Banana fails?
Read the error first. Another model may let you continue creating, but a rejected upload, expired sign-in, or invalid API request still needs the corresponding fix.
